Biography
Natasha S. Alford is an award-winning journalist, author, media executive, and storyteller on a mission to make sure the stories that matter most are never left untold.
As Senior Vice President and Chief Content Officer at TheGrio, Natasha leads one of America's most important Black media brands, shaping narratives that challenge, inspire, and reflect the full complexity of Black life in America. She is a frequent on-air commentator for CNN and MSNBC, a trusted voice on politics, social justice, and culture who brings both journalistic rigor and lived experience to every conversation. She is also a contributing writer to The Preamble, and as Board President of Joi's Angels, she puts her values into action, championing community, healing, and the next generation of leaders.
Natasha's journalism career has taken her from local TV newsrooms to the most influential stages in media. Her bylines and appearances span The New York Times, The Guardian, TIME Magazine, Vogue, Oprah Daily, and beyond. Her TEDx talk, "The Courage to Report," captures what it truly takes to pursue truth in the era of digital media and Black Lives Matter.
A 2019 Pulitzer Center for Crisis Reporting grantee, Natasha channeled that recognition into action, executive producing the Amazon Prime Video documentary Afro-Latinx Revolution: Puerto Rico (2020), a groundbreaking exploration of Afro-Latin identity that sparked conversation across the diaspora. She was also awarded a 2020 Black Voices for Black Justice grant and used that platform to launch a scholarship fund supporting aspiring journalists of color in her hometown of Syracuse, surprising recipients on camera in a moment that went viral for all the right reasons.
Her honors include the 2019 Maynard 200 Fellowship, the 2020 Poynter Women's Leadership Academy, and the 2017 Harvard Women's Leadership Award, a through-line of excellence that reflects not just what she has accomplished, but how she shows up. In 2026, Natasha was selected as one of 23 news leaders worldwide for the Microsoft AI Journalism Lab: Leaders Cohort at the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY, a program exploring ethical and strategic AI leadership in newsrooms.
Before the newsroom, Natasha was in the classroom. A Teach For America alumna (D.C. '10), she has also served as an Adjunct Assistant Professor in Visual Journalism at the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY, because she believes deeply that the next generation of truth-tellers deserves mentors who have lived it.
In 2024, Natasha published her critically acclaimed debut memoir, American Negra (HarperCollins), winner of the International Latino Book Award for Best First Book (Nonfiction). Raw, lyrical, and deeply human, the book traces her journey growing up as the daughter of a Black father and Puerto Rican mother, navigating identity, resilience, imposter syndrome, and the courage it takes to belong fully to yourself. She is also the author of a forthcoming children's book with HarperCollins, due out Winter 2027, continuing her commitment to teaching young people to love themselves and their family stories.
Natasha holds a B.A. from Harvard University ('08), an MSJ from Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism ('14), and an MPP from Princeton University's School of Public and International Affairs ('24), where she earned a certificate in Urban Policy. She lives in New Jersey with her family.

“American Negra” by Natasha S. Alford
The book that's been called required reading for our generation.
American Negra is the bold, breathtaking memoir from award-winning CNN journalist and media executive Natasha S. Alford, a woman who grew up between two worlds and refused to be boxed into either one.
Born to a African American father from Syracuse and a Puerto Rican mother, Natasha spent her early life navigating the beauty and complexity of her Black-Latina identity in a world that didn't have the language for who she was. From underfunded public schools to the hallowed halls of Harvard, from a hedge fund boardroom to a newsroom, this is a story of resilience, self-discovery, and the courage it takes to define yourself on your own terms.
Part memoir, part cultural reckoning — American Negra is a mirror, a love letter, and a powerful retelling of American history all at once.
